Trade rep office policy forum will be held on September 5

The Fair Trade Alliance (FTA), Initiative for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS), and Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development Foundation (PLCPD) in partnership with the Office of the Senate Secretary, External Affairs and Relations Office, and Senate Economic Planning Office will be holding a policy forum entitled RP in the World of WTO, AFTA, and Bilaterals: An Urgent Need for the Philippine Trade Representative Office on September 5, 2006, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at the Tañada Hall., Senate of the Philippines.

The participants will include representatives from different Senate offices and concerned government agencies, business groups, academe, NGOs, labor organizations, media practitioners, and other stakeholders.

The policy forum is being organized to discuss the nation’s current multilateral and bilateral trade commitments; raise the awareness of the participants on issues regarding Philippine trade policies, systems, and negotiations; and appreciate the importance of creating a Philippine Trade Representative Office.

The activity will also serve as an initial effort in pushing for the deliberation of the bill. Given the increasing number of regional and bilateral trade negotiations, as well as the suspension of talks to finalize the Doha Development Round in Geneva, the establishment of the Philippine Trade Representative Office as an immediate and practical need. A centralized body will hopefully increase the Philippine government’s capacity in advancing the national interest in world trade negotiations.

Philippine trade negotiators, senators, and trade advocates were invited as resource speakers and panel of reactors.
