FairTrade, a nongovernment organization in the Philippines, was originally convened on September 11, 2001 in response to a different devastation – the decimation of industrial jobs and farm incomes due to the patently unjust terms of trade and trading arrangements the Philippines was subjected to as a result of its disastrous policy commitments to the structural adjustment program (SAP) espoused by the multilateral financial institutions and its adherence to a one-sided liberalization commitment to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA).
